Project Spotlight: City and Borough of Juneau Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory

Launch Alaska Portfolio company Dynamhex partnered with the City and Borough of Juneau (CBJ) to help produce the 2021 Energy Use & Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory for Juneau, Alaska, an important project that paves the way for the community’s future sustainability initiatives.

A graduate of Launch Alaska’s 2020-2021 Tech Deployment Track accelerator program and based in Baltimore, MD, Dynamhex (which has since been acquired by Constellation) offers its Decarbonization-as-a-Service (DaaS) technology platform for companies, municipalities, and utilities to meet climate targets with data-driven solutions.

Through Launch Alaska, Dynamhex forged many community partnerships with entities like Alaska Electric Light & Power and the Southeast Conference Energy Committee before connecting with CBJ, which asked for the company’s help in compiling its 2021 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions inventory. Dynamhex’s software evaluated emissions across many sectors, including transportation, buildings and built environments, industrial processes and equipment, and solid waste treatment. With Dynamhex’s help, the CBJ found that Juneau has reduced its GHG emissions by 28% since 2010, exceeding its goal of a 25% reduction before 2032.

This project deployment experience strongly influences Dynamhex's future plans, emphasizing the significance of a data-driven approach for community-driven initiatives. By continually communicating with stakeholders and providing accessible data, Dynamhex effectively identifies areas for change and facilitates a feedback loop that benefits both the community and the company. The software's continuous usage to re-evaluate greenhouse gas emissions over time enables cost-effective updates through a subscription service, leading to full return on investment by the second year.

Looking ahead, Dynamhex is working in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Energy and others to make its product accessible to all of Alaska, aligning with its vision of a future where, as Dynamhex COO Patrick Hosty puts it, “no one is inhibited by data.”

The success of the Juneau project is a testament to the collective efforts of Dynamhex, the entire project team, and Launch Alaska. This partnership showcases the power of data-driven sustainability and sets an example for other communities and potential partners looking to make a positive impact on the environment and their economies.
