Chugach Electric Association Elections Are Coming. Here's Why Voting Is So Important.
Attention Anchorage area residents! Do you get an electricity bill from Chugach Electric Association every month? If so, that means you’re a member and you can vote in the cooperative’s annual elections to make your voice heard. In 2023, nine individuals are running for three open board seats on the Chugach Electric Association Board of Directors.
Voting opens on April 19. Members will receive an email with information on electronic voting. If you have not received your ballot, call (907) 563-7633 to make sure your information is up to date. Electronic voting closes May 19, but members can also vote in person on May 19 at the Chugach Electric Association Annual Meeting in Anchorage.
Why do utility elections matter? Chugach Electric Association is the largest electric utility cooperative in Alaska, serving about 93,000 members in Anchorage, Girdwood, Hope, Tyonek, and Whittier. The member-owned cooperative model is unique for a place as large as Anchorage and means that if you pay a bill with Chugach Electric Association's name on it, you are an owner of the utility. Electric utility board members make important strategic and business decisions that affect the energy we use to power our lives, now and generations into the future. In last year's election, just 11.8% of eligible members cast their ballots for the Chugach Electric Association board. We hope to see this number increase as more folks recognize the importance of their local utility's policies in providing stable, resilient, sustainable energy systems.
